Kaylee's Creative Portfolio

Welcome! I’m Kaylee Cheng, a creative storyteller who believes in expressing ideas through both the written word and tangible craft. This portfolio represents the culmination of my creative journey—spanning painting, poetry, journalism, printmaking, and bookbinding. I am particularly proud of my new chapbook The Ashes We Are Born Of and of my contributions to my student newspaper, The Oracle, where I served as editor-in-chief during the 2024–2025 school year. Please enjoy!

Layouts

Even though this layout is more on the simple side, it isn’t boring. I like how the stories work together and the way they are separated on the page. The “ribbons” on the volunteer clubs looks very polished and the heart hands infographic space in the center is well maneuvered.

February was our first ever color issue! I really loved how we used color in all these pages, especially how different these layouts and color pallets are. In the future, I hope to consider more about how the colors will show up on print because they did look a bit different

Really liked the use of the dominant photo illustration in the center, the entire page looks cohesive and the graphic elements can be digested at once, immediately able to tell who the story is about. The photo is also very genuine and beautiful

One of my favorite feature spreads ever. Love how the stories are separated but not extremely obviously, and the photo illustrations work extremely well. In the future should seek for more opportunity to use custom headline font. The photos are also dynamic and fit well with the topic/theme of the page. Very proud how this year’s feature layouts stray way from the “boxy” container story layouts. As for the stories, I really liked how they turned out. We learned from the “banned books” stories and made sure each story had its own unique focus while still being unified in angle and cohesive.
